The University of Birmingham awarded a contract to Cryogenic Limited for the supply and installation of a variable temperature cryostat system for condensed matter physics experiments.

The system is designed to maintain temperatures between 1.8 K and 300 K, with extra points awarded for guaranteed temperatures below 1.8 K.

It includes a superconducting magnet capable of applying fields up to 12 T of either polarity, a radiation shield between the sample space and the magnet to maintain superconductivity at 12 T even when the sample space is at 300 K, and a power supply for the magnet.

The system is dry, operating without cryogenic liquid replenishment, and includes all necessary pumps, compressors, reservoirs, and filters.

It features a larger-than-typical sample space and three measurement inserts: a standard insert, a sample-in-vacuum insert, and a helium-3 insert for temperatures down to 0.3 K.

The contract value was £248,000.
