Waltham Forest Council is seeking a provider to deliver Safer Routes 2.0, a programme forming part of the borough’s Serious Violence Duty Strategy and Action Plan to prevent violence, improve community safety and increase young people’s sense of safety on routes used to travel to and from school. Originally developed through the MOPAC MyEnds Partnership Programme and informed by the Safe Passage and UK-adapted Step Together approaches, the programme provides a visible, trusted youth worker presence on priority routes to enable relationship-building, reassurance, early intervention and community engagement. Early evaluation shows positive impacts on young people’s perceptions of safety, engagement with trusted adults, community reassurance and partnership working, and the council intends to sustain and further develop the model. Priority routes will be identified and reviewed throughout the lifetime of the contract using intelligence, local data, partnership insight and feedback from children and young people to ensure deployment remains responsive to local need and emerging risks.
