Commission is seeking a theatre group to research, develop and deliver a pilot street safety programme addressing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) that involves young women and girls through workshops, is trauma-informed via a specialist group throughout delivery, provides public bystander intervention training, and runs a communications campaign to strengthen the message and increase reach. Local and national evidence cited in the commission highlights VAWG as a significant issue for young people: 182 young women raised concerns about gender-based violence, sexism and harassment; 158 young women identified feeling at risk from boys and men because of their gender; research found 51% of girls aged 13 to 18 received unwanted sexual comments (33% of those aged 13–14), and 29% revealed they first experienced sexual harassment at ages 11 to 13. Plan International’s 2023 survey reported that over three quarters of young women and girls surveyed avoid activities or change their behaviour during summer to reduce unwanted sexual attention. The programme scope includes development and delivery of street-based performances, delivery of bystander intervention training in communities, and a communications campaign, with the commissioned theatre group taking a lead role from research and development through delivery and evaluation.
