A commissioning body is seeking a theatre group to lead a pilot street safety project addressing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), using youth workshops, street-based performance and public training. The project will involve voices of young women and girls through workshops in the development of the performance, ensure the work is trauma-informed by commissioning a specialist group throughout delivery, and offer bystander intervention training to the public alongside a communications campaign to strengthen the message and increase reach. Local and national evidence cited in the brief highlights VAWG as a significant issue for young people: 182 young women raised concerns about gender-based violence, sexism and harassment; 158 identified feeling at risk from boys and men because of their gender; 51% of girls aged 13 to 18 received unwanted sexual comments (33% of those aged 13–14); 29% first experienced sexual harassment at age 11–13; and a 2023 Plan International survey found over three quarters of young women and girls avoid activities or change behaviours in summer to reduce unwanted sexual attention. The scope includes development and delivery of street-based performances, delivery of bystander intervention training in communities, and a communications campaign; the commissioned theatre group will lead research and development through delivery and evaluation.
