Birmingham City Council is seeking a supplier for an ethnographic research study to explore residents’ lived experiences of car dependency in Birmingham as part of the Healthy Streets: Public Health Car Dependency Study supporting the Birmingham Transport Plan and Road Harm Reduction Strategy. The appointed organisation will use ethnographic methods — including interviews, accompanied journeys and observational research — to investigate how social, economic, environmental and street conditions influence travel choices and barriers to walking, cycling and public transport, capturing experiences across Birmingham’s diverse communities including those facing transport-related inequalities, and producing in-depth insights and participant case studies to inform co-designed Healthy Streets interventions; the contract starts 1 December 2026 and runs for four months.
