Microbiome Study on Traveller's Diarrhoea in Gurkha Soldiers
Awarded 31 Mar 2023
About
Defence Science and Technology Laboratory awarded a contract to The University of Birmingham for research into gastrointestinal health and the microbiome of Gurkha soldiers.
The study builds on preliminary work showing that Gurkha soldiers have a distinct gut microbiota, primarily a higher abundance of Prevotella copri, which may explain their reduced incidence of traveller's diarrhoea compared to UK-born soldiers.
The tasking will determine how the microbiome (bacterial and viral) changes over time and after gastrointestinal disturbances following overseas deployment.
The contract value is AUD 169,983.
