The commissioning body is seeking a supplier for a study to assess the effectiveness of commercially available probiotics in reducing or delaying Campylobacter colonisation in the gut of broiler flocks under commercial UK farming conditions. The programme will include an initial literature review, product screening and selection, recruitment of commercial broiler farms, field trials, laboratory and biomarker analyses, and statistical modelling and reporting to determine whether probiotic use in chicks (via feed and/or drinking water) reduces or delays colonisation and whether any reductions translate into lower poultry carcass contamination at processing; it will also assess co-benefits for producers such as bird welfare, flock health and production performance. The study aims to generate robust evidence on the effectiveness, practicality and scalability of probiotic interventions to inform future policy on reducing Campylobacter foodborne illness.
