Eradication of Invasive Rhododendron in Glen Creran

About

Argyll and the Isles Coast and Countryside Trust (ACT) awarded a contract to CD Tree Services & Countryside Contractor for the initial control of approximately 15.5 hectares of invasive rhododendron bushes on private land and close to the public road in Glen Creran, Argyll.

Control methods varied according to bush height: 'cut-and-burn', 'cut-and-chip', and 'cut-and-stack' were used for bushes over 1.3 metres, while foliar spraying with glyphosate herbicide was applied to areas with bushes less than 1.3 metres.

Cut stumps were treated with herbicide and marked with dye at the time of cutting.

The contract also included one follow-up foliar spraying treatment of rhododendron regrowth in the initially controlled areas plus an additional 1.3 hectares that had already been cleared, scheduled approximately two growing seasons after the initial treatment.
