BMB Joint Venture (BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall PLC & Balfour Beatty) awarded a contract for the Thames Tideway Tunnel project, specifically C405 Main Works West, involving an underground structure to a ventilation building at Hammersmith.

The project aims to control combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges by intercepting and diverting combined sewage flows into a new storage and transfer tunnel.

The main tunnel runs from Acton Storm Tanks in west London to Abbey Mills Pumping Station in the east, connecting to the Lee Tunnel for transfer to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works.

The scope includes tunnels (main tunnel and 11 connection tunnels), worksites (five main tunnel worksites, 16 CSO worksites, two system modification worksites, and works at Beckton STW), and associated works at Shad Thames Pumping Station and Bekesbourne Street.

The Hammersmith Pumping Station (HAMPS) Inlet Channel, part of a live sewage pumping station, remains operational throughout the works, with weather-dependent activities due to the gravity-fed storm relief system.

The contractor implemented real-time catchment sewer monitoring, computer modelling, and weather forecast modelling as part of the safe system of works.

The contract value is AUD 1.
