About

Office for National Statistics awarded a contract to Genus for the provision of historical map scanning.

The contract involved scanning field maps from the 2nd Land Utilisation Survey (2LUSB) and draft pages of the Wildscape Atlas (WA), acquired from the estate of the late Professor Alice Coleman.

The 2LUSB data, covering 64 categories with additional vegetation and habitat records for uplands, will enable ONS to construct an urban footprint and a Contemporary Residential Built Environment (CRBE) for the 1961 Census, and provide environmental and rural information for consortium partners Defra and UKCEH, as well as academic research.

The WA will offer a comprehensive overview of habitats and vegetation cover for upland landscapes of England and Wales in the 1960s, extending ecological baseline data and facilitating research into land use change.

The contract value was AUD 16,517.5.
