The Department of Energy and Climate Change awarded a contract to Delta Energy and Environment Limited for research on heat pumps in smart grids as part of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Annex 42.

The contractor was required to critically evaluate past literature and current field trials to assess methods for shifting peak electricity demand with heat pump systems, attend relevant IEA meetings, and report findings to DECC, the UK heat pump industry, and the IEA.

The work aimed to develop standardised solutions for different domestic archetypes to facilitate heat pump systems capable of avoiding peak electricity periods.

The contract was originally valued at £34,350 for the period 29 October 2013 to 31 March 2016 and was extended by £15,800 for the period 1 April 2016 to 30 September 2017, with no change to the original scope.
