Defra Network eTendering Portal awarded a contract to The James Hutton Institute for research on synergies in integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems to improve resource use efficiency and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions through circularity.

The project involves developing a matrix of indicators to quantify circularity in case studies across four European countries (Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK) and three South American countries (Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay).

It will simulate contrasting scenarios of carbon, nutrient, water, and biomass flows using process-based models such as manure-DNDC to predict farm-level trajectories for redesigning systems towards local circularity.

The contract value is AUD 100,000.
