Scottish Canals awarded a contract to AECOM, Augmentias Maritime and Offshore Engineering, Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and ECUS for research and development services to develop innovative management techniques to control the spread of the non-native invasive amphibious plant New Zealand Pigmyweed (Crassula helmsii) on the Caledonian Canal in Inverness.

The project, funded by Scottish Enterprise via the Can Do Innovation Challenge Fund, used the SBRI pre-commercial procurement process and was potentially two-phased.

The solution needed to be practical, scalable, and compliant with environmental regulations while considering the wider ecology of the canal and its catchment.

The contract value was £250,000.
