Feasibility Study on Painting Offshore Wind Turbine Blades to Mitigate Seabird Collisions
Awarded 31 Mar 2023
About
Defra awarded a contract to ABPmer for a desk-based evidence review, supplemented by stakeholder interviews, to investigate the feasibility and practicalities of painting offshore wind turbine blades as a mitigation for seabird collisions.
The project considered two patterning approaches: the patterning recommended by Martin (2022) and the painting of a single blade black as used by May et al (2020).
It also assessed the applicability of turbine painting to both floating and fixed wind turbines, accounting for physical differences and varying depths and distances from shore.
The contract value was AUD 36,200.
