The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs awarded a contract to University of Exeter for an evidence synthesis on coastal and marine-based approaches to engineered greenhouse gas removal.

The project brought together existing published and grey literature on priority marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) approaches, explored regulatory links to the London Convention/London Protocol, and developed a shared taxonomy for science and regulatory work.

The work delivered advice on regulatory implications and links to inform a meeting later in the autumn and provided a briefing for ministers.

The synthesis was reported to enable an initial Defra position on the environmental risks of these technologies, setting the stage for future follow-on work.

The contract value was £49,998.804.
