Evaluation of Approaches for Restoration of Degraded Arable Soils
Awarded 05 May 2024
About
Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs awarded a contract to NIAB for evaluating approaches for the restoration of degraded soils.
The project focuses on arable soils, which cover approximately 35% of England and have the lowest organic matter content and highest dry bulk densities nationally due to repeated cultivation and low organic matter inputs.
These conditions result in low biomass and activity of soil organisms such as earthworms and fungi, leading to poor soil aggregate stability and easy collapse of soil particles under wet conditions or pressure from livestock or machinery.
The contract value is AUD 79,976.82.
