Birmingham City Council awarded a contract to Heart of Birmingham Vocational College to serve as the education provider for its Supported Internship Programme, which began in September 2023.

The programme, run by the Council's Children's and Young People's Directorate, 14-19 Full Participation and Skills Team, offers a structured work-based study programme for 16 to 24-year-olds with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and/or Educational Health Care Plans (EHCP).

The provider delivers a minimum of two days per week of educational content to complement three days per week of practical work experience.

The pilot programme started with 24 young people in its first year, with plans to increase numbers annually, and runs for three consecutive years up to 2025.

Placements are hosted in Birmingham City Council's Digital Services, Customer Services Division, and Business Improvement and Support teams.

The Council collaborates with DFN Project Search, the National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTI), the Department for Education (DfE), and the British Association for Supported Employment (BASE) as funding and delivery support partners.
