Defra Network eTendering Portal awarded a contract to The James Hutton Institute for research services under the ERA-NET scheme, part of Horizon 2020, to deliver the collaborative project OPTIBERRY.

The project targets mild processing and biorefinery/extraction concepts to develop food and non-food prototypes and ingredients from berry biomass, particularly non-premium fruit.

Berries were chosen for their economic importance and regional availability, with over 15% of Europe's 2 million tons of berries not entering the fresh market due to retailer-driven quality reasons, often sold at dumping prices.

The contract value is £96,524.
