About

Royal Botanic Gardens awarded a contract to D-fine GmbH for consultancy services to expand the use of artificial intelligence in root fungal colonisation assessment.

The project aims to adapt AMFinder, an AI visualisation tool developed by Evangelisti et al (2021), for more complex field root samples.

Phase 2 focuses on improving the accuracy of AMFinder's outputs and expanding its functionality to detect different mycorrhizal types, building on preliminary work from phase 1.

This includes exploring a semi-supervised learning approach, improving user experience by editing dashboard interfaces, and developing pipelines.

The tool will provide rapid quantification of fungal colonisation in plant roots using images of ink-stained fungal structures taken with a digital slide scanner at RBG Kew.

Adherence to data regulation and standards is essential.

The contract value is £500,000.
