Contractor needed to deliver peatland restoration in the Black Mountains, covering site assessment, technical design, practical delivery support, monitoring and knowledge sharing. The appointed contractor will review existing data (e.g. NRW condition assessments, previous restoration plans, GIS habitat maps), conduct targeted field surveys to verify conditions and identify restoration opportunities, prioritise intervention areas based on ecological benefit and hydrological connectivity, and produce site-level restoration plans with methods, specifications, costs and schedules. The contractor must obtain necessary consents, liaise with landowners and graziers, plan logistics, develop method statements and oversee contractors during practical works (for example re-profiling, drain blocking, sphagnum reintroduction and rewetting) ensuring techniques follow best-practice guidance (e.g. IUCN UK Peatland Code) and providing ecological supervision and a Historic Environment watching brief where required. The role includes establishing baseline metrics (vegetation, hydrology, carbon), implementing a monitoring framework with fixed-point photo surveys, conducting immediate post-completion and Year 2 surveys, contributing to quarterly and annual reports, producing a final technical report, participating in project and technical group meetings, and supporting local skills development and employment opportunities where possible.

This opportunity is well suited to environmental consultancies or restoration contractors with demonstrable peatland assessment, hydrological and ecological delivery experience. Key considerations include securing consents, effective liaison with landowners/graziers, adherence to IUCN UK Peatland Code and providing a Historic Environment watching brief, plus managing logistics for field delivery and delivering monitoring immediately post-completion and in Year 2.
