Thetford Town Council is seeking a contractor to design and install a new footbridge over a small tributary leading to the River Thet at the Nuns Bridge site in Thetford. The existing small historic stone bridge carries vehicular traffic and, due to increased traffic and safety concerns, the council requires a separate pedestrian access. The appointed contractor must deliver the project under CDM regulations, provide two examples of previous design-and-installation projects, and include company information, insurance details, a bill of quantities, bridge design, method statement for installation, availability for delivery and two references with the tender. Specified construction elements include gabion baskets at the watercourse edge, concrete foundations into the bank, a bridge set slightly lower than the Nuns Bridge to meet Breckland historic planning officer requirements and to avoid impeding flow, and a steel frame with composite decking and handrails; the environment report calls for a lightweight, open structure with slender supports and reinforced concrete footings with steel supports for flood resilience. Insurance minimums required are Public Liability £5 million, Employers' Liability £5 million and Professional Indemnity £5 million, and the bridge must carry a minimum five-year guarantee. Site visits are mandatory, must be arranged with Nick Thompson at [email protected] or 07760629223, and completed in person by 28/03/26.

This tender is suited to contractors with proven bridge design-and-build experience and CDM competence who can supply the required project examples, insurance and references. Key considerations include the mandatory in-person site visit by 28/03/26, meeting the Breckland historic planning requirement to set the new bridge slightly lower without impeding flow, and demonstrating flood-resilient foundations (gabions, reinforced concrete footings and steel supports) plus the required insurances and five-year guarantee.
