About

Defra Network eTendering Portal awarded a contract to Bergen Arbortech for clear felling and timber extraction across approximately 1.8 hectares of mainly deciduous plantation woodland adjacent to Hawes Water lake within Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve.

The removal of trees was intended to restore two rare SAC priority habitats—marl grassland and alkaline fen—and to reconnect the grasslands and fens on the lake edge with adjacent grazed pastures, improving their condition and preventing scrub encroachment.

The cleared area was also to be grazed to create additional open habitat, and tree removal was to restore vistas of the lake from the eastern and northern approaches to improve the visitor experience.

The contract value was AUD 35,000.
