Natural England awarded a contract to James Hutton Limited for testing DNA metabarcoding as a technique for tracking sedimentary ecosystem asset condition.

The project is part of the Marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (mNCEA) Programme, a three-year Defra-funded initiative to deliver evidence on the extent and condition of marine natural capital assets.

The work involves producing DNA metabarcoding data for benthic eDNA sediment samples collected by Natural England along pressure gradients in up to two sites, including the Humber and Tees Estuary, during July-August 2024.

The data will be examined in the context of pressure gradients and associated infauna data to evaluate the potential of metabarcoding and traditional taxonomic output for determining the condition of marine sediments.

The primary interest is to assess changes in community composition in response to known pressure gradients, based on understanding of meiofaunal and microbial diversity, macrobenthic diversity, and wider community diversity.

The contract value is AUD 20,600.4, with a timeline from June 2024 to February 2025.
