Repair of Smith Street Car Park Retaining Wall in Rochdale

About

Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council awarded a contract to FW Sherratt Ltd for repair works to the retaining wall supporting Smith Street Car Park above the River Roch.

The contract, valued at £570,000, was awarded via exemption due to extreme urgency.

During excavations, groundwater issues not identified in previous ground investigations weakened the foundation ground, halting work while an alternative design was determined.

Delays and design changes increased the contract value.

Additional works were identified when access to the remainder of the wall revealed poor condition, including leaning into the river and bulging.

A second exemption was carried out due to extreme urgency to include these additional works in the existing contract.
