Reintroduction of Short-Haired Bumblebee to Dungeness, Kent
Awarded 29 Jun 2016
About
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs awarded a contract to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust for the reintroduction of the short-haired bumblebee (Bombus subterraneus) to the Dungeness area of Kent.
The project involved collecting queen bees from Sweden in early spring, quarantining them, and releasing healthy queens at Dungeness, followed by monitoring and public engagement.
It also included habitat creation through engagement with local farmers and landowners using agri-environment scheme incentives to support the spread and establishment of self-sustaining populations.
The contract value was AUD 60,000.
