R&D of Capacitive Resistivity Imaging for Military Non-Destructive Evaluation
Awarded 09 Nov 2015
About
The Ministry of Defence awarded a contract to British Geological Survey/NERC for the development of a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique using capacitive resistivity imaging (CRI) technology to map variations in bulk low-frequency electrical properties within structures and detect defects such as cracks, fractures, or corrosion.
The work, conducted under the SBRI Non-Destructive Evaluation programme (application 59098-446144), focused on military applications including in-situ evaluation of structural materials covered by sheathing, cladding, panelling, paint, tiles, flooring, insulating blankets, spray-on sealants or similar; detection and monitoring of moisture and/or increased salinity in structural or building materials; and detection and monitoring of thermal anomalies without direct contact.
Key deliverables included proof of concept that CRI technology is transferable from earth science to military NDE, a design concept for a portable and rapidly deployable CRI sensor array and instrumentation, a systematic assessment of CRI response to representative material flaws using predictive simulation and experimental lab study, and a detailed technical report covering de-risking activities, design rationale, emerging characteristics of a commercial prototype, and route to market.
The contract value was AUD 81,533.
