About

Natural England awarded a contract to Andy Godfrey Associates for invertebrate surveys of Barton and Barrow Clay Pits within the Humber Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The surveys covered key habitats including freshwater/brackish lakes, springs/seepage, marginal vegetation, reedbed, and willow scrub, using standard sampling protocols such as ground searching, pond netting, spot sweeping, sweep netting, and pitfall traps.

The work aimed to characterise invertebrate assemblages and assess their quality and condition using Pantheon, record habitat data including water salinity, and provide habitat management recommendations.

Surveys focused on 11 SSSI units, with two early season and two late season visits between mid-April and mid-August 2023, and a minimum of eight sample locations.

Principal taxa surveyed included Coleoptera, Diptera, Heteroptera, Homoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Mollusca, Neuroptera, Odonata, Trichoptera, and spiders, with a specific search for the bryozoan Lophopus crystallinus.

The contract value was £10,870, starting the week commencing 3 April 2023 and completed by 15 March 2024.
